Who Needs a Smog Check?
Typically, gasoline-powered vehicles model year 1976 or newer, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles, and most diesel vehicles from 1998 or newer need a smog check. Vehicles more than eight model years old generally must be tested every two years when renewing registration. Newer vehicles under eight model years are usually exempt but pay a smog abatement fee instead. A smog test is also required before registering a vehicle for the first time in California or when transferring ownership if the car is more than four model years old. Some exceptions apply for electric vehicles, motorcycles, and very old vehicles.
